Opportunity to work aboard the world’s leading Icebreaker vessel
A n exceptionally unique and exciting contract

Serco was awarded the contract for the Design, Build, Operation and Maintenance of Australia’s new icebreaker, the RSV Nuyina . The icebreaker will be a state-of-the-art ship that will offer scientists unprecedented and extended access to the Southern Ocean and Antarctica.

Serco Australia is managing the ship design and build process and will then operate and maintain the icebreaker from its home port of Hobart, Tasmania from 2020. The RSV Nuyina will form the centrepiece of Australia’s Antarctic presence and influence the shape of the nation’s scientific research programme for decades to come.

About the Role

The Steward is responsible for assisting the Chief Steward in maintaining the cleanliness and tidiness of the vessel’s accommodation and for general hotel services on board.

The Steward assists the Chief Steward with:
ensuring all bins are emptied daily and that proper segregation and processing of waste from the accommodation areas is carried out according to the Garbage Management Plan;
ensuring that garbage quantities are reported to the Chief Mate for record keeping
keeping galley waste processing room and storage areas clean and tidy;
maintaining the cleanliness of internal accommodation spaces including:
– alleyways (sweeping, vacuuming and mopping)
– windows (internal sides)
– stairways and lifts
– public toilets
– lounges, theatre, library
– offices and meeting rooms
– laundries (including ensuring consumables are available and lint filters are clean)
checking the cleanliness of, and restocking, cabins after Special Purpose Personnel (SPP)
changing linen and managing linen lockers;
loading and stowing provisions and hotel stores; and
issuing and inventorying hotel stores.
The Steward :
reports usage of hotel stores to the Chief Steward;
performs other duties as discussed at shipboard management meetings or as directed by the Master or Chief Steward.
attends training courses and seminars while on leave, as required.

> Certificate of Safety Training (COST) (STCW Reg VI/1
> AMSA Security Awareness Training
> AMSA HACCP-based Food Safety Programme
Elementary first aid—Reg VI/1 Code A-VI/1 table A-VI/1-3
AMSA Certificate of Medical Fitness
Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC)
